Personally, I’ve used Icon Meals since 2015. They’ve helped me stay on track when I’m traveling or don’t have time to cook. So recently, I decided to partner up with them to make Nutritioneering’s meal plans even easier to use.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through how Icon Meals works. And I’ll show you how you can get pre-cooked meals that fit your personalized macros. This is something you can only get through Nutritioneering, so make sure you check it out!

What Is Icon Meals?

Icon Meals is a meal prep and delivery service catered to fitness-oriented people. This convenient service allows you to eat healthy meals and hit your macros without having to cook. All you have to do is work out and eat!

What sets them apart from other meal prep services is that you don’t have to sign up for a recurring subscription. And there are multiple ways to order including customizable individual meals, a la carte ingredients, signature meals, and meal boxes.

With meals starting at about $8, Icon Meals is also one of the most affordable meal prep services out there.

Icon Meals + Nutritioneering

At Nutritioneering, we specialize in custom meal plans designed to help you reach your fitness goals. Think of it as the blueprint to build your dream body.

When you get a plan from us, you get personalized macro targets and recipes for every meal based on your schedule and lifestyle. But one thing I keep hearing from my clients is “I don’t have time to cook”.

No time to cook? No problem! By teaming up with Icon Meals, our meal plans now give you the option to order pre-cooked meals formulated to fit your personal macros!

How Does Icon Meals Work?

Each meal is chef-prepared using the finest ingredients in a quality-controlled facility. After cooking, the foods are chilled before being portioned to hit your macros.

Once your meals are ready, they’re vacuum-sealed and packaged in dry ice to maintain freshness. From there, the package is shipped via next-day air directly to your home, office, or pretty much anywhere with an address.

In fact, I routinely have my meals shipped to hotels when I’m traveling. As long as you have a microwave, you have healthy meals wherever you go!

With 11 protein options and 12 sides, there are literally 1,500 possible combinations. Giving you almost limitless flexibility to fit your tastes and your macros!

Protein Options

There’s a pretty wide variety of protein sources to choose from, including one vegan-friendly option. The meats are cooked to perfection and lightly seasoned to add just the right amount of flavor. Some of my favorites are chicken, salmon, and steak.

  • Beyond Meat Vegan Patty
  • Brisket
  • Chicken
  • Cod
  • Ground Beef
  • Ground Bison
  • Ground Turkey
  • Roasted Turkey Breast
  • Salmon
  • Shrimp
  • Steak

Side Options (Pick Up to 2)

In addition, you can choose 2 different sides consisting of starchy carbs or vegetables. Although you can select “None” if you’d like to skip it.

  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Brown Rice
  • Gluten Free Penne Pasta
  • Green Beans
  • Jasmine Saffron Rice
  • Kyoto Vegetable Blend
  • Quinoa
  • Red Potatoes
  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes
  • Cubed Sweet Potatoes
  • White Rice

Custom meals are what I like to use when I travel because I can easily hit my macros even while carb cycling or changing my meal plan from day to day. Below is an example of one of my meals (at that time they had tilapia).

Custom Breakfast

Just when you thought the Custom Meals couldn’t get any better, Icon Meals came out with Custom Breakfasts! The selection process is the same except you get to choose two proteins and one side from their breakfast menu items.

For Custom Breakfasts, there are 9 protein options and 4 sides. While there are overlaps with the regular Custom Meals, there are some breakfast-specific foods to choose from.

Breakfast-Specific Proteins

  • Egg Whites
  • Whole Egg
  • Turkey Bacon

Breakfast-Specific Sides

  • Home Style Protein Pancakes
  • Oatmeal

A La Carte

With a la carte, you can order separate items instead of a set meal. Think of it like buying the ingredients for Custom Meals in bulk. So you can combine them how you want, or just buy proteins, carbs, or veggies on their own.

In fact, I frequently order just pre-cooked meats when I travel. Then I pick up pre-cooked rice and steamable veggies at a local grocery store, which ends up being much cheaper.

Proteins

Also called “Protein By The Pound”, this is where you can order 16 ounces of your favorite meat or seafood. You can get all the proteins found in Custom Meals except the Vegan Patty. And there are a couple of meatball options you can’t get with Custom Meals.

The cost per pound ranges from $12 for chicken up to $22 for salmon. While this may sound pricy, it’s actually pretty reasonable considering they weigh the meat or fish after cooking.

The proteins shown are (in order); Salmon, Beef Meatballs in Pepper Marinara, Brisket.

Carbs

This category includes most of the starchy carbohydrates from Custom Meals such as rice and potatoes. Although there is no pasta or quinoa.

Some of the carbs are sold by the pound, while others are sold by volume (cups) or number (each). At the grocery store, carbs are cheap, so the prices seem a bit steep ranging from $8 to $12 per item.

Veggies

Last but not least are the vegetables, which include all 4 options found in the Custom Meals. As with protein, these are sold by the pound and range from $10 to $14.

Again, the cost seems somewhat high for vegetables even for cooked weight. But I guess that’s the cost of convenience.

Meal Boxes

Meal boxes are the fastest and easiest way to order a bunch of meals at once. Each box contains 12 pre-selected meals for $119, or about $10 per meal. All you have to do is add it to your cart.

There are currently 4 different boxes to fit your needs. Including the Chef Box, Keto Box, Lean Box, and Lean Box XXL.

Chef Box

The Chef Box contains 12 different meals hand-picked by the house chefs from that week’s Signature Menu. This option gives you the most variety, but the least control over your macros.

Keto Box

The Keto Box also contains 12 meals except that it’s 3 unique low-carb recipes from that week’s Signature menu. You get 4 of each recipe so it’s less variety, but all the meals are keto-friendly if that’s what you’re looking for.

Lean Box & Lean Box XXL

The Lean Box includes 3 high protein, lower fat recipes from that week’s Signature menu. In the regular Lean Box, you get 4 of each recipe (12 meals). While the XXL box has 8 of each recipe (24 meals). Again, you get less variety, but more consistent macros.

Over the years, Icon Meals has also come out with their own line of snacks, supplements, and even seasonings. Most of which are high protein alternatives to traditional foods.

Icon Meals Review

After seeing all the amazing foods Icon Meals offers, you may be interested in trying it out. But, if you’ve never used a meal prep service, it can be hard to know if it’s worth the money.

I’ll admit, I’m a little biased since I’ve been using Icon Meals for so long and I am an affiliate. However, my friends will tell you I’m one of the most objective people they know.

So I’m going to layout an impartial list of the good, the bad, and the so-so aspects of using Icon Meals. Let’s start with the pros and cons.

Pros

  • Fitness focused

Icon Meals was founded around bodybuilding with the needs of fitness athletes in mind. So their core meals are designed to be healthy and help you get in shape, even if you’re not a hardcore fitness fanatic.

  • No prep work, just heat and eat

Most meal prep services are actually just kits with the ingredients you need to make a recipe. Whereas Icon Meals delivers fully cooked and prepared meals, so all you have to do is put it in the microwave.

  • Build your own custom meals

The Custom Meals option is probably the best feature of Icon Meals. It allows you to pick the ingredients you like and create over 1,500 different meals. Plus they now have breakfast options which makes it even more flexible.

  • No subscription needed

Often, meal prep services sell weekly plans that lock you into a higher price with less control over what you get. Or they require minimum purchases of $100 or more. But with Icon Meals, you can order 1 meal or 100 meals with no commitment.

  • Works for individuals, not just families

Another problem with other meal prep services is that they’re designed for 2 to 4 people. But you can use Icon Meals even if it’s just you.

Cons

  • Shipping is very expensive

The biggest downside to Icon Meals is the shipping cost. Because they use overnight air with dry ice packaging, shipping can cost anywhere from $30 to $50 depending on your location. Although they have addressed this by offering free shipping on orders over $115.

  • Not available outside the U.S.

Another potential deal-breaker is that Icon Meals currently only delivers within the United States.

  • Only deliver Tuesday thru Friday

While being able to choose your delivery date is a nice option, they only deliver on Tuesday thru Friday. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of for your weekly meal prep

Meal Quality

With the pros and cons out of the way, the next question is – does it taste good? And the answer is, yes.

I can honestly say I haven’t had a bad meal from Icon, and I’ve eaten hundreds of them. My only complaint is that the broccoli has huge stems, but I feel like that’s really nitpicking. 😂

Customer Service

Of the close to 100 orders I’ve had delivered, I can only recall one time when the shipment wasn’t on time. But when I called Icon Meals they were super helpful in tracking it down and making sure it arrived the next day.

Also, they often throw in little freebies with your order which is a nice surprise.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Overall I give Icon Meals a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only major knock is the shipping price, but they have acknowledged that and offer a coupon code right on the top of their website.

Again, you might take my opinion as biased given my partnership with the company. But, there are over 250 customer reviews with an average rating of 4.7/5.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, a diet is only successful if you can stick to it. And the convenience of Icon Meals is one way to remove an obstacle between you and your goals.

When you combine the easy-to-follow plan provided by Nutritioneering with pre-cooked meals, you have both the blueprint and the building materials. So all you have to do is execute the plan and you can build your dream body.
