If you watch fitness-related content on YouTube, you’ve probably come across Ryan Humiston’s channel featuring humorous training videos.

But you might wonder who Ryan Humiston is, how he built his physique, and if his workout advice is legit. This article answers all those questions and more.

Who is Ryan Humiston?

Ryan Humiston is an American bodybuilder, photographer, and YouTuber that posts videos about exercises and workouts. He currently has about 1.7 million YouTube followers and 121K Instagram followers.

Despite his huge social followings, Ryan is a fairly private guy and doesn’t share much about his past or current personal life. However, I was able to find some information about his background.

Ryan Humiston Bodybuilding Career

Multiple bodybuilding websites show that Ryan Humiston competed in several contests from 2007 to 2013.

Ryan’s first contest was the Orange County Muscle Classic in 2007, where he placed 10th in the Middleweight class. Then he competed in the Border States Bodybuilding show the following year and placed 2nd in the Light Heavyweight division.

After a year off, Ryan competed in the Atlantic States contest, placing 2nd in the Heavyweight category. And the following year, he placed 5th as a Super Heavyweight in the NPC Emerald Cup.

According to Ryan Humiston’s Facebook page, he graduated from Coronado High School in 2005. And the Muscular Development website lists his date of birth as 12/31.

Based on this information, Humiston was most likely born in 1986, and his current age would be 37.

On September 19th, 2020, Ryan posted a wedding photo on his Instagram account. Earlier that year, he also posted a photo of himself on a ski trip with a woman, presumably his future wife.

Ryan Humiston stands between 5’10” and 5’11’ (178-180cm) tall, and his body weight has fluctuated over the years.

At the start of his bodybuilding career, Humiston would have weighed less than 176 pounds (80kg) on stage in the Middleweight division. But in his final show, he would have been over 225 pounds (102kg) in the Super Heavyweight class.

Now that he is no longer competing, I would estimate that Ryan’s weight is somewhere around 200 pounds (91kg) based on his height, muscle mass, and body fat percentage.

Is Ryan Humiston Natural?

From 2007 to 2013, Ryan Humiston gained roughly 50 lbs of muscle. Now it’s certainly possible for a new weightlifter to gain 50 lbs in 6 years without steroids.

But Humiston was already an elite bodybuilder in 2007, so his newbie gains were long gone. Therefore, he was almost certainly taking steroids during his bodybuilding career.

Nowadays, Ryan Humiston isn’t a competitive bodybuilder and has definitely lost some muscle since his super heavyweight status. So it’s possible that he could be maintaining his physique without anabolic steroids.

That said, Ryan acknowledged his use of peptides in a recent video. These are a group of compounds that stimulate your body to produce natural hormones like insulin or HGH.

So while peptides are not the same thing as steroids, they are still considered performance enhancers by anti-doping agencies and are prohibited substances in most sports.

Ryan Humiston Workout Programs

Ryan Humiston uses his YouTube channel to promote his workout plans. On a separate site, he sells 4-week workout programs for $19.99.

There are three different programs, including a four-, five-, and six-day training split.

4 Day “Backed by Science” Hypertrophy Program

Ryan Humiston’s “Backed by Science” hypertrophy training program is based on a series of YouTube videos in which he uses electromyography (EMG) sensors to demonstrate which muscles get targeted by specific exercises.

First, I must point out that Ryan’s “science” is based on a sample size of one person (himself). And his findings don’t necessarily represent statistically significant results.

That said, he references actual studies, and the videos are entertaining. Plus, it’s just a cool concept, so I may do some case studies using the same type of sensors.

As for the workout routine, it’s a run-of-the-mill four-day workout split that doesn’t appear to be personalized at all.

Here is the hypertrophy workout program:

  • Day 1 – Back / Traps / Calves
  • Day 2 – Chest / Triceps / Abs
  • Day 3 – Shoulders / Biceps / Calves
  • Day 4 – Quads / Hamstrings / Glutes

5 Day Program

Ryan Humiston’s website also has a five day per week program for more advanced lifters. This routine is the standard Bro Split Workout, where you train one muscle group per workout.

Depending on where you click, you may find the 30-day garage-style program or the full gym program. While it’s possible the exercises differ, the actual workout split is the same.

Humiston’s 5-day workout program looks like this:

  • Day 1 – Arms
  • Day 2 – Shoulders
  • Day 3 – Back
  • Day 4 – Chest
  • Day 5 – Legs

6-Day PPL Program

Finally, Ryan Humiston offers a 6-day push, pull, legs workout program. The benefit of this PPL split is that you train each muscle group twice per week.

Some of the top bodybuilders in the world use this kind of 6-day split. And I often use a modified variation for myself and my clients.

However, the downside is that it might require too much time for some people. And it would be best if you had your sleep and diet dialed in to recover fully between workouts.

Here is an example of Humiston’s 6-Day PPL workout plan:

  • Day 1 – Push 1
  • Day 2 – Push 1
  • Day 3 – Legs 1
  • Day 4 – Push 2
  • Day 5 – Pull 2
  • Day 6 – Legs 2

Are Ryan Humiston’s Workouts Legit?

One thing I noticed about all of Ryan Humistons plans is that he sells them on bare-bones websites. In other words, it’s a landing page with a short description of the plan and a “buy now” button.

Also, Humiston’s sign-up form doesn’t collect anything except your name, email, and credit card. Therefore, there is no way his workout program is tailored to your individual needs.

In my opinion, cookie-cutter workout programs like this aren’t worth your money. And you’re better off getting a more personalized plan based on your body, lifestyle, diet, and fitness goals.
