EZ Bar Weight
An EZ bar is a versatile piece of equipment found in nearly every commercial gym. And many people include it in their home gyms as well.
But unlike standard barbells that weigh 45 lbs, there is no universal weight for EZ bars. This means it can be hard to know how much weight you’re actually lifting.
That’s why I’m going to show you EZ bar weight by type, size, and brand. Plus you can try the EZ bar weight calculator to see how much the bar weighs with any combination of weight plates added.
What Is An EZ Bar?
In case you’re not familiar, an EZ bar is a type of weight lifting barbell with a slightly curved shaft. The angles make the bar more comfortable to grip when performing exercises like bicep curls. So it’s sometimes called an EZ curl bar.
In addition, the curves allow you to use a narrow or wide grip on the bar. As well as an underhand or overhand grip (supination vs pronation).
Along with curls, the EZ bar can be used on exercises like lying tricep extensions. And a number of other exercises for different muscle groups.
EZ Bar Types
There are multiple types of EZ bars to fit different uses, weight plates, and budgets. Three of the most common types are the 1-inch EZ bar, the Olympic EZ bar, and the super EZ bar.
1-Inch EZ Bar
With 1-inch diameter ends, this bar only works with weight plates that have a 1-inch diameter hole in the center. So it’s most commonly found in home gyms.
Typically, 1-inch EZ bars are 47-48 inches in length. They are also lighter and less expensive than other varieties. But they’re not as robust, with a weight capacity of 100-200 lbs (45-90 kg).
For 1-inch EZ bars, there are two types of ends available; threaded or smooth.
Threaded
With this type, a threaded lock collar prevents the weight plates from sliding off. But if the collar is too loose, the plates wobble. And if it’s too tight, the weights don’t rotate which changes the feel of the exercise.
Smooth
On a smooth-ended EZ bar, the weights are held in place with 1-inch spring clip collars. The clips make changing weight easy. But they can slide off if the bar is tilted up.
Olympic EZ Bar
Another type of EZ curl bar has 2-inch diameter sleeves on the ends. This is the kind of bar you’ll find in a commercial gym because it’s compatible with standard-size Olympic plates.
The overall length can range from 47 to 57 inches. And it’s generally heavier than a 1″ bar. With a sturdier construction, you can add up to 400 lbs (182 kg).
Super EZ Bar
Lastly is the super EZ curl bar. It has a more exaggerated curve in the handle that creates a nearly neutral and position ideal for hammer curls and skull crushers.
Also, you can get the super version in both the 1″ and 2″ ends.
How Much Does An EZ Bar Weigh?
Without weight plates, an EZ bar weighs from 5 to 30 lbs (2.3 to 13.6 kg) depending on the brand, type, and size of the bar. Below is a table of several different types to give you an idea of actual EZ bar weights.

EZ Bar Weight Example
If you’re a numbers nerd like me, then you probably want to know exactly how much your gym’s EZ bar weighs. The easiest way to find out is to throw it on a scale!
You can use your bathroom scale for your home gym. And most commercial gyms have scales for checking your weight. Just make sure you have permission before moving a scale at your gym.
In this example, I used a small analog scale from the locker room. First I weighed a 10, 20, and 30 lb dumbbell to verify calibration. But you can skip this step if you’re just looking for a ballpark number.
Then I put the EZ bar on the scale making sure it was balanced in the center and the ends weren’t touching the ground. As you can see in the images below, this Olympic EZ bar weighs 18 lbs.

Smith Machine Bar Weight
Now that you know how much an EZ bar weighs, you may be curious about other bars in your gym. One of the most confusing bars belongs to the Smith machine, which can vary in weight even more than the EZ bar.
