In this article, I compare the popular G-Fuel energy drink with traditional pre-workout supplements to help you determine which is better for your energy needs.

What Is G Fuel?

G Fuel is a popular energy drink from Gamma Labs marketed towards gamers, athletes, and individuals seeking increased energy and focus. It is designed to boost energy and mental focus without the high sugar content in some energy drinks.

While G Fuel is often associated with the gaming community, its benefits can extend to other activities like resistance training. And their product line has expanded beyond energy drinks.

Types of G Fuel

G Fuel offers two different formulas to cater to different consumer needs. Here are their currently available products.

Energy Formula

The energy formula is G Fuel’s best-seller, which includes powder drink mixes sold in tubs or to-go packs and canned energy drinks.

Hydration Formula

The hydration formula is a stimulant-free version of the energy formula currently available in powder form. And it may also be available as a sparkling drink soon.

G Fuel Ingredients

G Fuel Energy is a multi-ingredient supplement that contains several compounds to provide energy, focus, and endurance.

The main ingredient in the G Fuel energy formula is caffeine, which causes an increased feeling of alertness and faster reaction time. And it also contains vitamins and antioxidants to support metabolism and immunity.

In addition, G Fuel contains a few different amino acids, such as taurine, L-tyrosine, and L-citrulline. These ingredients are also commonly found in pre-workout supplements.

Is G Fuel Pre-Workout?

Even though G Fuel contains some of the same ingredients as a pre-workout supplement, it is not specifically formulated to enhance resistance training or cardiovascular exercise.

Taking G Fuel before a workout may help you feel more energized and focused during training. But it is not the same as taking a pre-workout supplement designed for athletic performance.

As shown in Table 1, G Fuel has the vitamin and focus ingredients in amounts similar to the average pre-workout. However, most pre-workout supplements have a higher dose of caffeine to provide more energy for vigorous training.

In addition, G Fuel contains L-citrulline, an amino acid that promotes blood flow. But the dosage is about 10x less than a typical pre-workout supplement and would likely not provide any real benefit.

G Fuel vs. Pre-Workout Cost

The cost is another factor that may influence your decision about which energy product to buy. G Fuel energy powder costs about as much as a typical pre-workout supplement at $35.99 per tub.

However, looking at the number of servings in a tub is vital. While a standard pre-workout contains 20-30 servings, G Fuel packs 40 servings into one tub.

Therefore, G Fuel only costs about $0.90 per serving, and pre-workout costs around $1.65 on average. So while G Fuel lacks some ingredients, it costs nearly 50% less per serving than the average pre-workout.

Which Is Better?

Whether you choose G Fuel or a traditional pre-workout supplement depends on the benefits you want to get.

For example, G Fuel would work fine if you’re looking for a mild stimulant to give you a slight boost before a workout, study session, or gaming marathon. And if you don’t need a physical performance boost, you might as well save your money.

That being said, G Fuel will not provide the same increase in blood flow and muscular endurance that you get from a well-formulated pre-workout. So if you’re trying to maximize your results in the gym, stick with a pre-workout designed for that application.

A Well-Formulated Pre-Workout

If you take pre-workout instead of G Fuel, you’ll still want to check the label closely to ensure your chosen brand has the right ingredients and dosages.

You should look for at least 6,000 mg (6 g) of L-citrulline or L-arginine for optimal blood flow. And for muscular endurance, it’s best to find a supplement with about 3,000 mg (3 g) of beta-alanine.

Some pre-workouts are loaded with up to 400 mg of caffeine, the maximum recommended daily intake, and way too much for people sensitive to stimulants. So look for something with 150-300 mg of caffeine if you want a good energy boost without causing anxiety or jitters.

One of the best all-around formulas I’ve found is from a brand called Nutricost. This pre-workout has 300 mg of caffeine, 3 grams of beta-alanine, and 6 grams of L-citrulline.

In addition, Nutricost Pre-Workout has high amounts of B vitamins, taurine, and L-tyrosine to help with energy metabolism and focus. And it only costs about $0.83 per serving, which is less than G Fuel!
